On the 23rd Of December 2009, the president and two other members of the Altus Boom Operators Association made their monthly trip to the Fort Sill Veterans Affairs retirement home in Lawton Oklahoma. On top of this being our normal trip; we decided as an association to use this opportunity to give back to the veterans of the home.
As we entered the home we were invited by the sight of the modern and well maintained facilities, that included a large foyer/ sitting area that was warmed by the site of a large fresh water fish tank for the enjoyment of the residences. This fish tank was interesting because its inhabitants were the fish the residents caught from the homes fishing pond; giving the residents of the VA home something to do in their free time, that is also taken by activities and visitors on a daily basis.
In the following pictures that were taken by Marcus Barnes, we show the interaction with the residence of the home. The veteran pictured (who’s identity was wished to be kept private) was a WWII vet that served in the Normandy Invasion as a load master dropping paratroopers at 200ft Above Ground Level. His comments and stories were fascinating to say the least. Also pictured is our President (seated) Jeremiah Docken and active member of the Association Mike Morris (center). |

The next photo was taken right after Jeremiah presented the 200 pair of shoe socks that the Association donated to the Veterans, these socks will do two things for the residence; keep their feet warm through the night, and ensure they don't slip and fall on the polished concrete floors of the home. The picture also shows more of the vets having a good time with Army Soldiers who visit the home in order to make sure the residents are comfortable and happy. |

The donation was made possible by the hard work and dedication that our members and supporters. We hope to be able to do more in the future for these veterans who have fought for their country with valor and honor. This is how we thank them for their service. |
